Internship Reflections by Xu Mu-Hua at Kairi Eguchi Design / Roots
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern in Japan for a month. During my internship, I learned that design emphasizes simplicity and practicality rather than unnecessary flamboyance. We were responsible for every step of the process, from design and material preparation to cutting wood and assembling the final product. After addressing measurement discrepancies and reinforcing the structure’s stability, we finally completed the bookshelf. As my internship was drawing to a close, I also had the chance to visit various attractions in Kyoto and Osaka during our free time. Preparing our own meals each day provided a great opportunity for interaction and bonding among us. (2022)

I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to go abroad during my university years! In early June last year, I received the exciting news that I could intern in Japan. The earring design I was most familiar with involved using laser engraving to cut the pieces, and since I had previously worked on laser engraving projects at school, I was quite comfortable with the process! This overseas internship allowed me to truly understand the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone. It taught me how to better express the practicality and potential of my designs. (2022)

During my internship, I gained not only technical knowledge but also learned about the spirit of craftsmanship and the commitment to quality from Mr. De Ren and Ms. Sheng Zi. They emphasize providing customers with high-quality products and services while pursuing their dreams. Even with family responsibilities, they never lose sight of their aspirations.

The saying “Japanese subways are very complicated” is indeed true! I have always longed to visit Japan, and I was incredibly happy and excited to have the opportunity to fulfill this dream during my university years. My daily commute mainly involved taking the subway and walking, along with some bus rides, and I truly experienced what the locals mean when they say, “Japanese subways are very complicated!” The streets in Japan are also very clean, and there aren‘t many bubble tea shops. In public places, people are very considerate and try to avoid making noise that might disturb others. This summer has probably been one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. (2022)

Having been to Japan twice, I experienced very different feelings each time! My first visit was for tourism, while this time I came to Japan for an internship. During my one month of interning here, I found myself integrating well into the local lifestyle. Perhaps it was because I had Japanese friends with me, and our daily conversations revolved around each other‘s cultures. Through this internship, I learned the importance of effective communication, the value of accepting different opinions, and how to anticipate and solve problems. I gained so much from this experience. (2022)

During my internship, I focused on cultivating independence, gaining practical work experience, and improving my language communication skills. I worked on solving the issue of discarded wood materials by applying my design expertise to create practical products. This not only addressed the long-standing problem of waste but also enhanced the usability of the materials. (2022)

At first, I had little hope for the plan to intern abroad, but I am grateful to all the teachers who facilitated this opportunity. Thanks to them, I experienced the landscapes of a different country during my senior year. I had the chance to immerse myself in the local traditional culture and observe customs firsthand, documenting the cultural differences throughout my internship. Despite these differences, I felt a strong sense of ritual and appreciation while in Japan. (2022)

The company primarily focuses on promoting local culture and offering experiences of rural life to enhance the local economy and population growth. By showcasing the natural environment, traditional culture, and local cuisine, they attract tourists while also providing services to assist newcomers in relocating. One aspect that struck me was how, near Nara Park, people would yield to deer on the roads. This made me feel that there is a refreshing sense of coexistence between humans and animals, which was a unique experience for me. (2022)

Before going to Japan, I was very interested in Japanese shrines! During my internship, I focused on creating interesting connections between products and consumers in daily life. I started to think about the most commonly used items in everyday life. In my free time, I visited Universal Studios, where there were still many people despite the heat of the day, and I ended up getting sunburned. I also visited the Kyocera Museum of Art in Kyoto, where the flow of movement made it easy to know where I was at all times, creating an overall comfortable experience. I feel fortunate to have had this valuable internship experience, which made my entire summer very meaningful. (2022)
